I’m sad to say my short story didn’t win the Writer’s Digest short short story contest. However, it was my first attempt/submission. There is obviously room for improvement. I intend to rework the story and resubmit as the opportunity presents itself.
I’m very pleased to announce I finished my first Novel. It’s currently in the hands of my wife. Although she isn’t an editor, she has always been an avid reader. She is unafraid to tell it to me straight, which is most valuable. I was recently accepted to take part in a 12 person writing class which will span 6-7 months. I hope to have the Novel polished and publishable early next year.
Although, my Novel is my WIP, I’ve started another project. I have the concept, orbital characters, antagonists, protagonists and some plot ideas in place. I have 11 pages so far and I’m excited about the possibilities which lay ahead.
There are two interesting things happening with my new project. One, I’m “pantsing,” which is a big deal for me. I did a large outline of my first Novel before writing. I had a good road map laid out and knew where to start and where I was heading. I had intended to do another outline; however, I sat down and the ideas started coming. Thus far I’m taking it one writing session at a time and learning about the story as it develops.
The second thing which is different from my previous book is research. My Novel didn’t require much if any research. This book will require familiarity with a wider range of topics. Some of which I have little to no experience with. I can’t remember which Master Class teacher it was, but they suggested you only use about 10-15% of the actual research you do. I’d said, thus far that seems to be accurate.
So, a quick recap. I hope to work on publishing early next year after my class. I intend to continue working on my new project along the way, although it will take a back seat to the Novel. Additionally, I plan to rework and resubmit my short short story. If it wins or doesn’t win this next round, I’ll make it available here for you to read.
